7 time champion to test Indycar

The 7 time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson will be testing an NTT IndyCar Series car next month.

Johnson will test at Berber Motorsports Park in April, in a testing opportunity that Arrow McLaren SP has arranged for him.

A few heads were turned last month, when Johnson showed up for pre-season testing at COTA, but only as an interested spectator at McLaren, to follow them a bit.

McLaren and Johnson have had dealings in the past, when Johnson tested a Formula 1 car, while Alonso drove his NASCAR during fall 2018, in a PR stunt.

The driver with the legendary 48 on the door, announced prior to the current NASCAR season, that this would be his final year in that part of the sport. The 44-year-old racer from California has been in the top category since 2001, racing full season since 2002. He has an amazing CV with 7 titles on it, which no other of the current competitors can match. But it’s getting close to three years since his last NASCAR win, which has resulted in a change of crew chief. Everybody is cheering for at least one victory this season, if not the championship, which could make him the most successful NASCAR driver of all time. His current 7 titles tie him with Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt.

If this test is anything more than a PR stunt, we have to wait and see. But the fact is, that he has won the Brickyard 400, which is the NASCAR race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a total of four times. So it would be nice to add an Indy 500 to that record.
